Vocalist/Composer/Producer/Arranger with her 4 solo recordings; 27-year member with the internationally renowned jazz vocal group, New York Voices; co-founder of two super groups Moss and JaLaLa; Instructor at New York University's Steinhardt School of Music, she also has Berklee College of Music as her alma mater. Lauren has a wide-range of sought after abilities as an adjudicator and clinician and go-to vocal guest artist/educator at jazz programs and conferences worldwide. Will Smith

Dr. William E. Smith is an In-demand Saxophonist; Arranger; Award-winning Composer; Recording Artist; Publishing Company/Music Library Publisher for TV and Film; Recording Artist; Creator of the Podcast, Making Money in the Music Business (www.makingmoneyinthemusicbiz.com); Associate Professor, Dept of Music, Bowie State; Former Director of Music Industry, North Carolina Central University; Former faculty with Howard University, Jazz Studies. He has several music score and song placements for The Steve Harvey Show, The Carson Daly Show, Real Housewives of Miami, A PBS documentary and several independent films. Dr. Smith has a Ph.D in Ethnomusicology, and degrees in Jazz Composition and Jazz Studies. Lenora (Zenzalai) Helm Hammonds

Founder of Vocal Jazz Summer Camp, Lenora is a sought-after Vocal Jazz Musician and Educator, who international renown as a Recording Artist; Composer; Arranger, Bandleader for Tribe Jazz Orchestra; Former U.S. Jazz Ambassador and Fulbright Senior Music Specialist. Founder of LenoraHelm.online;  Jazz Vocal Advisory Board for Juilliard Jazz; Associate Professor, Jazz Studies; North Carolina Central University; Director, of the award winning NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble; Founder/Author and Program Coordinator for NCCU Teaching Artist Certificate. Lenora has seven solo recordings, the last leading her big-band, Tribe Jazz Orchestra. She is also a cofounding member of SEPIA, with Marlon Saunders. Lenora has many composer awards and fellowships, including Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works Composer's award, has presented her music and arrangements for the International Association of Jazz Arrangers & Composers (ISJAC) and Jazz Education Network (JEN). Her music has been featured in the ESPN network's Black History Month specials and on radio and film. Trineice Robinson-Martin

Dr. Trineice Robinson-Martin (aka Dr. Trineice) is an accomplished performer, teacher and scholar. The creator of Soul Ingredients®: The Methodology, a teaching methodology and system for training a singer's musical style/interpretation in African American folk-based music (i.e. jazz, gospel, R&B blues, etd.) and author of So You Want To Sing Gospel. She is on the faculty of the music departments of several universities, including Princeton University, Institute for Somatic VoiceWork™ The LoVetri Method, and Gospel Music Workshop of American. A sought after expert in vocal pedagogy for jazz, gospel and commercial music, she has authored for the Journal of Singing and has a chapter in Teaching Singing in the 21st Century. Dr. Triniece serves as Executive Director of African American Jazz Caucus, on the Board of Directors of Jazz Education Network (JEN), and a member of the distinguished American Academy of Teachers of Singing. www.drtrineice.com

 

Kerry Marsh  

Kerry Marsh is a multi-faceted vocalist, composer and arranger who has become in-demand publisher for vocal jazz ensembles. He has become a competitive supplier for all things vocal jazz and is in high demand as a commissioned vocal jazz arranger. A member of the Jazz Studies faculty at University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, CO, under his direction the UNC Vocal Lab and Northern Colorado Voices have won six Downbeat Magazine Student Music awards with eleven more going to individual vocal students in that time. Kerry is also a member of the dynamic vocal group, Vertical Voices with his talented wife, Julia Dollison. His works for vocal jazz ensemble include comprehensive materials and arrangements to rehearse and teach music, with rhythm section accompaniment, part and minus-one tracks. Marsh has a BME from University of Kansas and a MM from University of North Texas. Marsh is a busy adjudicator and clinician, and has directed all-state jazz choirs across the U.S. He has been the vocal arranger and choir contractor for singer/songwriter Ben Folds with many symphonies across the country. www.KerryMarsh.com

In this first-of-its-kind music workshop you will work in a community of singers and instrumentalists and build skills while you:

Group Singing

Learning how to sing in a group is a specific skill set when singing jazz. Understand blending and holding tight harmonies, singing jazz rhythms and sight reading jazz ensemble charts. And, learning how to record vocals in an online environment is a must-have skill in our new virtual environment.

Solo Singing

Singing jazz as a soloist requires particular attention to the defining conepts of a jazz: incorporating swing feel, and the ability to put the jazz vocabulary in your intrepretation of the melody and lyrics.

Musicianship

Singers are musicians, and jazz singing requires an understanding of how music functions. Vocal Jazz Summer Workshop will provide you with a road map to take you from where you are, to where you need to be.  We will cover music theory, sight singing, jazz vocal ear training, song forms, basic chart writing and basic arranging. With these skills you can learn to build the vocabulary to successfully navigate jazz repertoire, and speak to instrumentalists with knowledge and confidence.

Jam Sessions & Songwriting Workshop

Perform with instrumentalists to try out your new skills! Craft your new songs and hear your vocal arrangements to test your ideas.  Get support from the community of singers at the workshop, and receive feedback and coaching from the Vocal Jazz Summer Workshop faculty.
